ooh we are so cheenafied..really?
Tuned into the Chinese FM yesterday night and listening to the songs being played. The memories just came back to my minds. The days back in IJ when most of the people around me are so anti-Chinese speaking people. They ostracize them and roll their eyes when ever any Chinese sentence is spoken.
And I thought there are more English speakers in the later generation, taking English as their first tongue. But only to realize it might not be the case after interacting with the people out of school. Strangely it seems the poly people, people I met at work or in public they spoke more Chinese, taking it as their main language. (And even quite a portion of uni students) It just slips out of their mouth naturally without hesitation.
So maybe for my dearest classmates who went to poly or something they would have seen more? Now do they have a new league to ostracize their Chinese speaking poly mates or do they conform to it?
If we’re cheenafied in your eyes, you have not seen enough. Just because we can speak in our mother tongue that you can’t does not make us inferior. In the end, would it not be you being a Chinese who lost your ability converse in Chinese. And maybe to some, you are just kantan, fake English. Hahaha
Maybe it sets a better parity between the arrogant ones and kind classmates I had. Those who wouldn’t look down on you and outcast you because you speak Chinese and they accept you for who you are. Pls lo Char, Jean. Carolyn, Joyce etc English are at your level or even higher but they were never arrogant and idiotic.
Note: I don’t have anything against Chinese speaking English as their first language(in fact I think they are quite cool and classy) it is those that are proud of themselves because they can’t speak their mother tongue, Chinese, and criticize the others who are different from them. Honestly there is nothing to be so proud of because you are at the losing end compared to the bilinguals.
It is even worst for those who laugh at others calling them cheenafied when they can’t score in/understand Chinese language and consistently getting borderline or failing grades for English tests. Don’t you see the fact that at least we get As or Bs in Chinese and we pass English? (Most of the time I passed with grades that are of your range. The joke was the top 5 of the class passed English and I was one of them for 3 consecutive years) What would it imply for you who can’t pass English (or ur chinese)and laughs at those you classified as cheenafied?
